What is EWG Green Grade and Why It Matters for Baby Skincare
Why Ingredient Labels Are So Confusing — And What to Do About It
You're standing in the baby aisle, flipping over a bottle, staring at a list of 30 ingredients you can't pronounce. Is this safe? Is it gentle enough? How do you even know?
That's exactly the problem the Environmental Working Group (EWG) set out to solve. And their Green Grade rating system has become the most trusted tool parents use to cut through the noise.
What Is the EWG?
The Environmental Working Group is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. Founded in 1993, EWG maintains Skin Deep® — the world's largest cosmetics and personal care product safety database, with over 90,000 products and 2 million ingredients rated.
Their mission: give consumers the information they need to make safer choices, especially for vulnerable populations like infants and young children.
How Does EWG Grade Ingredients?
EWG scores each ingredient on a scale of 1–10 based on:
- Hazard data — toxicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive harm, allergen potential
- Data availability — how much scientific research exists on the ingredient
- Regulatory status — whether it's restricted or banned in other countries
The color-coded grades break down as:
- 🟢 Green (1–2): Low hazard — the safest ingredients, backed by strong safety data
- 🟡 Yellow (3–6): Moderate hazard — some concerns or limited data
- 🔴 Red (7–10): High hazard — significant safety concerns
A product earns an EWG Green Grade when all of its ingredients score in the green range — no exceptions.
Why Does This Matter Especially for Babies?
Babies are not small adults. Their skin is:
- 30% thinner than adult skin, absorbing ingredients more readily
- More permeable — what goes on the skin goes into the body more easily
- Less able to detoxify — their liver and kidneys are still developing
- More reactive — prone to irritation, rashes, and allergic responses
This is why the EWG Green Grade is especially meaningful for baby products. It's not just about avoiding one or two bad actors — it's about ensuring every single ingredient meets the highest safety standard.
What Ingredients Does Mongdies Avoid?
Every Mongdies product is formulated to meet EWG Green Grade standards. That means we never use:
- ❌ Parabens (preservatives linked to hormone disruption)
- ❌ Sulfates (SLS/SLES — harsh cleansing agents that strip the skin barrier)
- ❌ Synthetic fragrances (a common trigger for eczema and allergic reactions)
- ❌ Artificial dyes or colorants
- ❌ Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
- ❌ Phthalates or mineral oils
Instead, we use eco-friendly surfactants derived from natural sources, Canada Glacier Deep Ocean Water as our base, and plant-derived actives like Witch Hazel, Hemp Seed Extract, and Centella Asiatica — all EWG Green rated.
Mongdies' Other Certifications
